Yachting is your dream and you are starting your career in this industry. You are searching for jobs and you finally found one! You applied and now they are calling you for an interview. Wow! You should get prepared! But…how? You know you are ready and you know you want this job, but how can you make the best possible interview impression?
There are a few things that instantly comes in mind, such as being on time, being polite and comunicative, being properly dressed. Apart from that, we’re bringing you some advices from interviewers, recruiters and heads of departments, which are going to help you to get that role!

- Be mindful of your body language.
Try not to nervously play with a pen or wiggling on a chair in the middle of an interview. Take a moment to compose and focus on the conversation – you need to say the right thing and have the coherent body language.
- Opportunity to shine
Remember, this is your opportunity to shine and tell them what you can bring to the table! You need to speak up about your key attributes and why they should hire you above the other candidates.
Also, reading your CV before an interview and highlighting it with a pen is not a bad idea at all. In that way you can talk about you without panicking, you can name the things you are proud of and you won’t have „Aaaah! I should have said that!“ moment.
- Making an eye contact is a must
Look your interviewer in the eyes while speaking to them. If there is more than one interviewer, make sure you give them equal attention, even if one of them is not actively interacting!
- Knowing the name of the interviewer/interviewers
If you know the name of the interviewers and call them by their respective name when introducing yourself might be a good start! In that way you will show them you have prepared yourself and that you respect them.
- Prepare a few questions
If you want to amaze them, prepare a few questions you would like to ask them! It will help the interview flow nicely and it will show that you are interested in the position.
You can ask something like: Are there any specific aspects of the job that I should be aware of? What is the best thing about working on this yacht? Why has the last person letf the job? What is the next step after this call?
- An absolute winner
“Do you have any reservations about my application”? This is an old-time favourite and will be an absolute winner! By asking this question you demonstrate that you are interested and keen on the job and also that you are confident in yourself and not afraid of rejection.
- Do not ask about the salary!
Just don’t. Leave that to the discretion of the interviewer.
- Smile
You know how you can hear a smile while speaking on the phone? When you smile you sound warm and friendly, not flat. Smiling is going to shift your whole attitude, it is unlikely you’ll be slumped on a chair when you’re smiling.
- Don’t speak negatively of your last yacht’s captain, crew or responsibilities
Confidentiality is crucial in this luxury sector. The hiring manager will need assurance that you can be trusted to be discrete. So, never criticise or gossip about previous employers in an interview or on social media.
