You’re are obviously considering a job on a yacht and we will give you a little more insight. Here are 10 things you should know about working on a yacht:
- Not having time for yourself everytime you want.
This one falls down to exercise, eating, and any other rituals which you do. You need to be flexible, everything is to the clock.
- You can put up with everything.
Speaking back to people in yachting is not acceptable at all. You will find yourself in so many situations where you’ll ask yourself „what is the point of this?“ or responding to an annoying guest request, but you need to be able to nod and smile. Still, they paid for their vacation and they want everything to be like they imagined.
- You are workaholic.
Yacht crew will typically work long days and/or in shifts with unsociable hours and will always be the first people up and last people to go to sleep on the boat. Usually, you are on call day and night for the owner and/or guests. If you are genuine harworker ready to work 14+ hour shift, this job still may be the right for you.
To cheer you up a liitle bit, guests aren’t on board all the time and whilst each yacht differs, most have a standard 8 – 5 working day, Monday to Friday, without guests on. And yes, you do get weekends, long weekends, and time off.
- You can do any job you’re asked to do.
If you know the worst, you don’t expect anything else and aren’t led on with false ideas.
- Meticulousness is needed.
You have an eye for detail like no other and before you know it you’ll be spotting those watermarks on surfaces in no time. If you think you are not like this, trust us, you will become one.
- Spending few months onboard.
Yachting involves plenty of time away from your home, friends and family. It means moving aboard for some time with a limited amount of annual leave.
- Sea-sickness.
Yachting actually involves far less time ‘sailing’ than you would think. But if you do get sea-sick, you’ll learn how to deal with it or even get used to it.
- Having a rommie.
You’ll find yourself with very little personal space and time on board. With the majority of space on a yacht reserved for the owner and guests, you’ll likely share cabin with at least one other. On the other side, sharing a room will often grant you some lifelong friends and lots of fun.
- What is the comfort zone?
Getting outside your comfort zone is something that is happening from the start and is following you through your progress. Joining a new boat and getting to know a bunch of new people is so intimidating and also there are boat cameras on you, you have to report every movement on the radio and keep an eye and often interact with the guests.
- you are daydreaming about traveling.
This job is anything but static. You travel from one place to another, but that is not the best part. You wanna know what is the best part? Traveling with no price tag! You will travel all around the world, meet so many different cultures and people and gain so much beautiful experiences and, hear this, you’ll be paid for doing that!
